Which airlines offer the best frequent flier program? And which airline alliance offers the best frequent flier program overall?
There are many variables to consider. First of all, a good airline frequent flier program would have miles that take a long time to expire or don't expire at all. Next, it should offer a lot of available itinerary and scheduling options. The more destinations, the more available flights, the better. The major airlines form alliances with their fellow major airlines to offer more flexibility to travelers, so what the alliances offer are of value, too. Free upgrades to business or first class and free access to airport lounges are an important consideration for "elite" frequent fliers. Many fliers like the option to buy additional miles to hit award ticket redemption marks. Heavy credit card spenders, rental car users and hotel dwellers also enjoy earning miles from their non-flight activities. Some airlines or alliances are good only for US domestic trips, some are good in a specific region like Europe or Asia.
