What all is included in an inclusive resort package?

I keep hearing about inclusive resorts of all kinds. I am especially noticing the Beaches Resorts commercial that say "ultimate all inclusive family vacation resort". However, what exactly does inclusive mean? Does this mean the food and lodging is free? What about drinks and cocktails? What about excursions and activities? Are there spas and massages available? Do these cost? Should you tip at a resort that is all inclusive? In other words, if I buy an inclusive vacation, what do I have to pay for?

Each resort has their own definition of what "all inclusive" is but they typically include drinks, meals, activities, accomodation, and non-motorized watersports. Extras typically include spa services, premium restaurants, motorized watersports, etc. These breakdowns are typical in the Caribbean. Some resorts call themselves super-all inclusives and include some extras such as spa dollars, motorized watersports, and additional activity options.

There is usually no requirement to tip at all inclusives but I typically do tip for drink services, meals, and room service.

Each resort will have their own definition of "all inclusive" so make sure you know what is included before making reservations. Most resorts will include all of your meals, drinks, accommodations, activites, and entertainment. Spa services are often not included. Some resorts have specific meal times while others have 24 hour room service. Alcohol is usually included but premium brand alcohol is not available at all resorts.
